The shear rock walls of Kyrkberget are easily visible from Storuman. The drop gets quite dizzying the closer you get to the edge.
The outcrop is a well-known landmark along the Umeälven river and represents the end (or the beginning) of the mountain chain. To the east the landscape consists more of rolling forest-covered hills, to the west it gradually becomes more dramatic, with peaks rising above the tree line. Some of the only fossils to be found in the mountain chain have been discovered here.
The outcrop not only provides amazing views of the landscape, it also has a rich and varied fauna and flora. Several species of bird of prey live here and its steep southern rock face is a mecca for climbers. Other sections of the rock face is off limits to climbers.
With the sun heating the rock at the foot of the outcrop, flora not normally found so far north grow here. Poisonous but beautiful Daphne Mezereum blooms early in May as do Enchanter's Nightshade and Hackelia.
